Miceli’s tribute to MJQ is not just a tame nostalgia trip:

Tony Miceli’s tribute to Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet is not just a tame nostalgia trip. This was evident in JJ Smyth’s last Sunday night before he played a note. The vibraphonist’s multi-coloured T-shirt was as far as he could get from the sober dark suits favoured by the MJQ.

His treatment of the tunes was equally freewheeling. While there was a touch of Jackson’s ethereal side in Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, with its dainty fugue-like intro, in other numbers we were reminded how dramatically percussive he could be when he wanted.
